Between The Lines

Editorial / Typographic Publication

Between The Lines is an editorial project created as part of an ISTD brief. It explores 50 years of Helvetica through the lens of New York City’s music, movement, and identity, tracing how the typeface and the subway system became cultural threads connecting the city’s shifting sounds.

The publication traces how Helvetica, the typeface of the MTA subway system has quietly connected the city’s five boroughs, acting as a visual thread through decades of cultural change.

Each chapter pairs a borough with a defining musical era, Bronx block-party hip-hop, Manhattan punk and new wave, Brooklyn indie reinvention, Queens’ multicultural rap, and Staten Island’s gritty underground sound.
